In Hainan dialect, coffee is affectionately referred to as "Gebi". "Ge Bi Ou" refers to black coffee, which has a slightly astringent taste but a sweet aftertaste. In 1898, Malaysian overseas Chinese planted the first coffee tree in Hainan, and coffee penetrated into the lives of Hainan people with an astonishing speed and strong vitality.

The 2023 China Urban Coffee Development Report shows that the scale of China's coffee industry was 2007 billion yuan in 2022, and it is expected that the scale of China's coffee industry will reach 369.3 billion yuan by 2025. The favorable timing and location, coupled with the strong rise of the coffee consumption market, provide unlimited possibilities for economic development.

The tax policy advantages of Hainan Free Trade Port inject a shot in the arm for coffee processing enterprises. In the Hainan Free Trade Port, coffee processing and manufacturing can be carried out under the "front store, back factory" model, and can enjoy double reduction and exemption of import tariffs and value-added tax. The first coffee factory in New China: Sun River Coffee Factory

In 1953, Xinglong Overseas Chinese Farm (Taiyanghe) Coffee Factory was established, which was the first coffee factory in New China. On February 7, 1960, Premier Zhou Enlai visited Xinglong Overseas Chinese Farm for inspection. After drinking three cups of Xinglong coffee in a row, he left behind the widely circulated saying: "Xinglong coffee is world-class. I have tried many foreign coffees, but it is still better to grow our own coffee." In the 21st century, the coffee factory introduced modern roasting equipment and moved its site from the banks of the Sun River to about 5 kilometers east. In 2007, the former General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine approved the implementation of geographical indication product protection for Xinglong Coffee, which was the first geographical indication product protection implemented in China's coffee industry.

In July 2022, Zhengda Xinglong Coffee Industrial Park opened. The industrial park adopts the model of "front store+back factory" and is committed to building a garden style industrial tourism industrial park that integrates coffee production, processing, sales, and tourism.

The first instant coffee production line in China: Lishen Instant Coffee

In 1986, with the approval of the State Economic and Trade Commission, the Ministry of Light Industry, and the People's Bank of China, China's first instant coffee production line was approved for construction. On the basis of the Haikou Coffee Flavor Factory, a preparatory office for the Haikou Instant Coffee Factory was established, with an investment of 21 million yuan to introduce an instant coffee production line from the Danish company Nero. In June 1988, China's first instant coffee production line was officially put into operation, ending the history of foreign coffee brands monopolizing the domestic instant coffee market.

Nanguo Food

As a long-standing specialty brand in Hainan, Nanguo Food's first product developed was coffee. Southern Coffee selects high-quality coffee beans from Hainan Xinglong, produced using Japanese technology and advanced equipment from Germany. It inherits the flavor and uniqueness of Hainan coffee, with a smooth taste, fragrant aroma, and rich elegance. Some products also incorporate coconut milk flavor, which has strong regional characteristics in Hainan and is highly popular in the market.

Mushan Coffee

The Mushan coffee under the Haiken Hot Crop Group uses "Dafeng No.1" and "Dafeng No.2" medium grain coffee varieties based on Robusta as the basic germplasm, which are coffee tree species with independent intellectual property rights in China. From the "Dafeng" brand in 1985, to the "Island" and "Qiongfeng" brands, to today's "Mother Mountain" brand, Mushan Coffee not only has a 64 year history, but also 35 years of brand inheritance and quality assurance. In 2017, Haiken Dafeng Coffee Industry Group was approved for establishment, and the trademark of Mushan Coffee was approved for registration. "Mushan" Coffee was officially put into operation and launched.

In addition to the aforementioned brands, there are also Fushan Coffee and Houchen Coffee, which are deeply involved in local leisure offline scenes, Longyuan Coffee and Yunshang Niuling Coffee, which have been adhering to the development of the "estate economy", and Maihao Coffee, which choose large grain varieties such as Liberica.
